- Location. Indian Cave State Park is located near Shubert, NE, which is about 2 hours from Lincoln, NE or Kansas City. There aren’t many attractions nearby other than the state park itself.
- Sites. There are two loops in the campground, Ash Grove Campground and Hackberry Hollow Campground. The campgrounds are similar in amenities and tree cover. All the sites on Hackberry are reservable, but only a few in Ash Grove can be reserved ahead of your stay. We stayed in site 102 in the Ash Grove loop.
Each site has electric. The sites had 50/30/20 poles, but some of them showed age. I didn’t note any electrical issues, but I certainly was glad we had our surge protector. All sites were blacktop and mostly level. Each site had a picnic table and a fire ring. Lots of shade to choose from in all the sites.
- Facilities. The showerhouse needed some work. It’s on the older side and not that clean. Bring your shower shoes! The dump station for the state park is near the visitor center, about .5 miles from the campground.
- Amenities. The Ash Grove loop has a small playground in the middle of it. It’s nothing fancy, but kept my kids and the roaming pack of campground ragamuffins entertained for hours. All the drives are wide and paved. It made for great bike riding for the kids.
Conclusion. The campground is a pleasant and quiet escape not too far from two major cities. The campground is showing some signs of age, but it is a great state park campground within an interesting park in Nebraska.
Would We Stay Again? Yes. It’s an out of the way park that probably doesn’t fill up all that often. Enjoy the quiet!
